The Pains of Being So Damn Sincere

by on September 15, 2009

Brooklyn’s The Pains of Being Pure at Heart should be insufferable. They write achingly sincere songs about youthful love and heartache, borrowing structurally from The Cure and sonically from My Bloody Valentine, and using one too many not-so-clever puns as song titles. (“The Tenure Itch”? “Young Adult Friction”?) It should be the least engaging music on the market today, but damn it if it isn’t catchy and addictive. Their self-titled debut record has long since wormed its way into my most-played list, and I have to admit that were I not already booked I’d be heading to Neumos to catch their show tonight. (925 E. Pike St. $15; all-ages balcony, floor 21+.)
