The Weekend Wrap Slims Down for Summer

by Michael van Baker on June 19, 2010

Fleet Foxes say their new song “Montezuma” is fully tracked.

I’m trying out a more skimmable Weekend Wrap format, which I hope you’ll like because it’s taking way too long to assemble this post otherwise. Also, I’ll be focusing on stories we didn’t already cover here on TSB, because why should I reward you for not reading all week? That’s nuts.

Brit indie folk: Band Peggy Sue are at the Sunset Tavern tonight, and are recording a video while they’re in town. Look for it here next week!

Transportation: The PSBJ reports that Horizon Air is planning to lay off 120 employees, and that the last day of Metro Mariners shuttles will be June 24. Seattle Transit Blog was happy about Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver mayors signing a high-speed rail manifesto–turns out we may be HSR pioneers, with BNSF help. And Sound Transit thinks it might be cheaper to keep light rail underground from 75th to 85th.

Politics: Publicola has returned to an all-politics focus (thanks, Baby Jeebus), and says that Mayor McGinn plans to make his police chief pick within a month. (Strategically it makes sense for McGinn to pick Davis, who like McGinn is short on executive experience–you can’t buy loyalty but you can pick it out in a lineup.) They also have a “Dino Rossi on abortion” post that’s worth reading. Seattlepi.com: City Council commits $15 million to South Park bridge replacement.

Real estate: Dan Bertolet forecasts the size of the reset in Seattle reset, and the Seattle Bubble weighs in on the same subject. Danny Westneat on the tale of the Kirkland squatters. Redfin is improving everyone’s access to monthly real estate data–look for more from them on TSB.

In the Neighborhoods: CHS kept an eye on Metro’s diesel vs. electric trolley bus decision process, and noted that prices at the Broadway Farmers Market came in lower than most local grocery chains. CD News reported on the city approving Swedish Hospital’s expansion in the area. Eastlake Ave. blog says Starbucks in not only helping fund the July 4th fireworks, they’re helping clean up afterwards.

MyBallard covered the memorial for the victims of last weekend’s deadly fire in Fremont. Magnolia Voice was warning runners about an ass-slapping bicyclist. Queen Anne Creeper is not an invasive ivy, alerts Queen Anne View. MyWallingford was publicizing the 2010 City Chicken Coop Tour.

West Seattle Blog win hands down on coverage of the South Park bridge, and also have the news on a West Seattle Jones BBQ location. And of course Rainier Valley Post had a terrific piece on the punch heard ’round the world.
