I know exactly what you mean about being stuck in a car! I used to drive the whole way in to work - it was WAY to far to bike. Then I got a Montague folding bike and now even though I still drive part of the commute, I can ride a bike for the second half. I think that if more people realized that you can have bikes and cars together (even on the same trip) there would be a lot less anger out there.

Very thoughtful piece - seems to capture the issue....Most of us who are fortunate enough to be able to use a bicycle or our feet for work and other errands aren't trying to make those who are stuck with cars feel bad, or guilty. We just want to be able to get from point A to point B safely. And we know that the safer it is, the more likely that one more person will give it a try, and then a few more - then they are hooked!

Thanks MvB for this piece.

Probably of more significant note is that Seattle is listed as a Gold Bicycle Friendly Community, putting it somewhere in the top 14. :-)

While poking around the LAB listings you link to, I noticed something curious. That "#23 of 244" rank at the top of the table is strictly a population rank (NYC is #1, LA is #2, Chicago is #3 and so on). Bizarre I know, but just figured I'd point out that it's not an overall rank of bike friendliness.

Hi Dan, not to single you out, we all do it ("it" being asking legitimate policy questions). And it's not to say that you shouldn't give it a shot. I just wanted to talk about bike commuting (as a personal decision) as being driven by other factors. Just as the negative externalities aren't why people drive, the positive externalities of biking aren't necessarily why people bike. They just turn out to be there, and to be great.

I've tried to be persuasive too:
http://publicola.com/2010/10/15/why-i-ride-a-bike/

But isn't also legitimate to ask grown up people to the face reality that it might take a little effort, and it might even be a little disruptive, for us to successfully respond to the massive change we all know is coming, e.g. climate change and peak oil?
