Seattle isn’t supposed to bear the brunt of today’s coastal storm, that dubious honor goes to, of course, the Washington coast. “Some of the buoys have shown significant wave heights of over 30 ft!” reports meteorologist Cliff Mass, joyfully, adding that, “On the coast, winds of up to 50-70 mph were commonplace.” At 7 a.m., Hurricane Ridge recorded an 87-mph gust of wind. Winds there have since tapered off to just 45 to 55 mph.
But we are going to get plenty of what’s known technically speaking as “wet stuff.” Up in the passes snow is falling, and attempting Snoqualmie requires chains. (Mass predicts “over a yard” of snow for the Olympics.) The University of Washington’s Probcast software gives a 10 percent chance of over an inch of precipitation today and almost a half-inch tomorrow, continuing on in a similar vein throughout the week: Pelting rain down here, pummeling snow up there.
KOMO’s Paul Deanno says you’ll have to wait for the weekend for the weather to “calm down,” though today should be the “stormiest day of the week.”
