This Friday Only, Uber’s Delivering On-Call Ice Cream Parties

by on July 12, 2012

File this under “nuttier than a praline waffle cone”!

This Friday the 13th, your ice cream truck luck is going to change–if you’ve downloaded the Uber app. Regular SunBreak readers know us for fans of the on-call car service, which turns your smartphone into a town-car (or SUV, for larger groups) dispatch service, pretty much wherever you happen to be standing. (They also provide $50 flat-rate airport service between downtown Seattle and SeaTac.)

Just as they’ve solved the “never one around when you need one” taxi dilemma, Uber, for one sweet, sweet day, is tackling the elusive ice cream truck. Per their release: “On July 13th, users can activate the Uber app on a smartphone, and within ten minutes, an Uber Ice Cream Truck will arrive at their location.” How popular will you be when an ice cream truck pulls up to the office? Well, let’s see, there’s a formula…take the predicted high on Friday, mid-7os, and multiply that by…does anyone know logarithms?

From noon to 6 p.m., Uber trucks will deliver ice cream (and other Uber paraphernalia) suitable for an ice cream party of five for $12. (We’ll leave it to you to sort out who gets to be Charlie, Bailey, Julia, Claudia, and Owen.) More than five ice-cream-hungry mouths to feed? You can purchase multiple $12 parties once the truck shows up.

Uber Seattleā€™s General Manager, Michelle Broderick, says the company rolled out “vehicle-type” requests for July 4th, and it worked so well, they decided to do it again.

The Uber app is available for iPhone or Android–you’ll need to create an account if you don’t already have one. Then, Friday, when you open the app, you’ll be able to pick an ice cream vehicle, set your location, and grandly await your frozen confection. More details are available here.
