“Beat the Bridge” Diabetes Fun Run-Walk-Roll Hits Montlake Sunday

Screen Shot 2013-05-18 at 12.06.15 PMNordstrom and JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) are your hosts for the 31st annual Nordstrom Beat the Bridge race-slash-fundraiser at Husky Stadium this Sunday, May 19. But first, the traffic. Expect Montlake Boulevard NE between NE 44th Street and NE Pacific Street to be closed by 7:30 a.m. for staging, and then the smart thing to do would be to avoid driving in the area until after 11 a.m.

The off-ramp to Montlake from eastbound SR 520 will remain open, but cars will have to wait for runners to pass. Now might be a good time to mention that more than 10,000 participants are expected. They’re expected to raise $1.5 million for the Northwest Chapter of JDRF. (Begun in 1983, Beat the Bridge’s total has topped $13 million used for Type 1 diabetes research.) Online registration has closed, but you can still register in person at Husky Stadium today, from noon to 5 p.m., or on Sunday morning starting at 6:45 a.m.

Why is the event called Beat the Bridge? The course crosses University Bridge, which will be raised around 8:50 a.m. You have to try to get across before it goes up, but if you do get stuck and have to wait, there’s a live band and prizes to pass the five minutes or so before the bridge comes back down. That’s not likely to happen to people in the competitive 8K run (8:30 a.m. start) and wheelchair race (8:38 a.m. start). But there’s also a 4-mile family walk, 1-mile fun run, and a Diaper Derby for toddlers.

Nordstrom has been a backer of the event since the beginning — it was a response to a colleague’s son being diagnosed as having T1D. Something like one thousand JDRF and Nordstrom volunteers donate more than 5,000 hours to the event.
