Chris’ View of Bumbershoot 2015, Day Three

Chris’ View of Bumbershoot 2015, Day Three

Monday opened, for me, with the Lady Parts Justice event at the Bagley Wright Theatre. It was hosted by Lizz Winstead, comedian/writer/”Daily Show” creator. The event was to kick off the new app from Lady Parts Justice, Hinder. It looks like more of a website that is mobile-friendly, but it does provide a valuable service in showing you the steps anti-choice politicians are going through to restrict access to family planning services. Winstead made a quite funny (and likely true) joke about how she thought 2pm would be the best time for their show because everyone would probably be too fucked up by 5.

The show itself, at 90 minutes was the longest thing I saw at Bumbershoot all weekend, was enjoyable. It had a diverse group of comedians. I particularly enjoyed Joyelle Johnson and Leah Bonnema. Hari Kondabolu was a surprise guest, and he was great (as expected) but he did the same set, more or less, that I saw yesterday in the Super Secret Comedy Show (but it was very funny). One thing I did realize was that his story about being told to go back to America took place in Denmark, not Amsterdam, as I noted in Sunday’s recap). Helen Hong and D’Lo Kid. D’Lo had a funny joke about being trans, so he’d be having a same-junk marriage instead of a same-sex marriage.

Chris’ View of Bumbershoot 2015, Day Two

Just got to Seattle for the day and we’re taking over the @bumbershootfestival for a few hours. Gonna go try to find myself some trouble. 📷: @wooofy

For me, Bumbershoot opened with the Super Secret Comedy Show in the Cornish Playhouse. It was put on by Mike Coletta and Monica Nevi, who host the HugLife podcast and make the monthly Super Secret Comedy Show a monthly occurrence. The lineup they had for a Sunday at 2pm was ridiculous. For an hour long show, they had six comedians performing about 10 minutes each, and it progressively had gotten better after each one (or so it felt). Nevi hosted. Here’s the lineup: Mike Coletta, Mitch Burrow, Bryan Cook, Solomon Georgio, Hari Kondabolu, and Sean Patton.

Though it was kind of a dude-heavy lineup (which I give a pass to because I also caught the “Scary Feminist” panel later in the afternoon), but there were a lot of lines that I found myself laughing about later in the day. My girlfriend used to work in the helicopter industry, along with a large sampling of her circle of friends, so I was pleased to bring home some helicopter repair humor, courtesy of Mitch Burrow. Bryan Cook made note of a Romanian princess who was arrested in Oregon for taking part in cockfighting. I didn’t think something like that could be real, but I looked it up and it is. (I’ll save from revealing the punchline because it’ll spoil the story and ruin the joke, and I don’t remember the exact wording). Hari Kondabolu made note of doing a show in Amsterdam Denmark and bombing. Someone in the crowd told him “Go back to America.” He said he’s been told to go back to many countries, but that was the first time being told to go back to America.

Comedy is always one of the most popular parts of programming. In fact, comedy ranks third after live music and the Shiskaberry’s booth. Experts in the field are saying that this is not one of the strongest years of comedy programming for Bumbershoot because there’s no big name comedians, like Patton Oswalt or the guy who does all the voices in the Police Academy movies (September 24-26 at the Parlor in Bellevue).

But I do think there are some great laughs to be had all weekend. Here are a few of the things that I recommend and hope to catch while I’m on Seattle Center grounds this weekend:
