The word on the (dance) street is right. The young British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon is the closest to an heir to Balanchine who has come down the pike in the past fifty years. Not that his work is any clone of the great 20th century choreographer. It is all his own, but there is the same feel of both inspiration and inevitability to his creations, as though there was no other way for the dancers to move and yet no one else thought that way.

You are reading an excerpt from Wow is the Word on All Wheeldon at PNB.

The SunBreak supports RSS for you diehard RSS readers out there.

Wheeldon is in Seattle for PNB's All Wheeldon program (through October 2), and has been working with the dancers on his choreography for Carousel (A Dance), After the Rain pas de deux, Polyphonia, and Variations Sérieuses. Wednesday night, after a conversation with Boal, he and Boal watched as the dancers performed excerpts, then commented on what they'd seen.

You are reading an excerpt from Christopher Wheeldon on Ballet Life, Balanchine, and His Hoover.

The SunBreak supports RSS for you diehard RSS readers out there.
