Natalie Dungey, 12, Solos with the Auburn Symphony

Natalie Dungey is 12. She was the soloist in Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto with the Auburn Symphony at the Auburn Performing Arts Center last weekend. From the first measures, she showed that she is a musician, not just a technical whiz kid. What separates the one from the other is the ability to feel the music, to shape the phrases so that they arch and soar, or expand, or flow serenely when needed: that is, to give the music life. What’s Better Than Seven Cellos? Eight Cellos

If you’ve never before heard a host of cellos playing together, you’d be astonished at the thrill of the sound, so rich and reverberant, so exciting. Such was my first reaction to the sound of six cellos playing a movement from a Vivaldi concerto for two cellos with four others taking the roles of violins, viola, and accompanying cello.  Downstairs at Town Hall on Friday night, it was the opening work on a program for eight cellos and one soprano presented by Simple Measures.
