The Little Big Show Packs a Tuneful, Fundraising Punch

The five New-York-by-way-of-New-Jersey rockers shuffled quietly onto the stage and picked up their instruments like they’d just set them down a couple of hours earlier. The audibly excited crowd swayed back and forth to their melodic, dreamy, and often swirly songs mostly from Days. Between-song banter not being their forte, guitarist and singer Martin Courtney’s dashing backstage for a forgotten capo provided the most entertaining interlude. Yesterday, KEXP graciously let me to pretend to be a VIP and attend a private performance by We Were Promised Jetpacks, at the Triple Door downtown. You can tune in to the results today at 11 a.m., or try their concert tonight at Neumo’s. Of all the donor benefits I know, KEXP’s VIP Club Concerts seem like the most aimed at giving the people what they want: more music, surrounded by people who also love music. Maybe the most successful cross-cultural meeting of the night was between Grand Hallway’s Tomo Nakayama and the Faroe Islands’ Gudrid Hansdottir–they seemed really to have clicked, temperamentally. Hansdottir sang a song about fog; Grand Hallway has an album called Winter Creatures.

This time the accolades for the local pop troupe come from Entertainment Weekly, who yesterday named them one of the ten best new bands at South By Southwest this year. Says Leah Greenblatt, “These new Sub Pop signees felt like laying back in a patch of soft green grass (not beer-vomit-soaked dirt).
