The Kronos Quartet, Mostly Live at the Neptune

The Kronos Quartet, Mostly Live at the Neptune

For many, the chance to hear Reich’s new work was probably enough, despite the $55 ticket price. It’s a harrowing piece, uniting the terror and humanity of 9/11, opening with the violin mimicking an open phone line, and with the anxious voices of air traffic controllers laid, via a “stop-motion sound” technique over the instruments, so that they, too, are instruments. Later come the voices of women who kept vigil over the dead. Continue reading The Kronos Quartet, Mostly Live at the Neptune

The Muppets’ “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Cover Doesn’t Make Them Any Cuter

The Muppets always creeped me out as a kid, but I want to like them now because Jason Segel likes them and he seems like a rad guy. When I saw that the fuzzy puppets had covered Nirvana’s “Teen Spirit”—and that Dave Grohl apparently plays on the soundtrack for the new Muppets flick starring Segel—I assumed I’d be converted. UFOs Visit Seattle, Inspire Hilarious Commentary on YouTube

Thanks to KIRO’s Twitter, we were alerted to GossipandGabber’s YouTube video of the aliens “fucking landing.” (Note: they don’t land.) It’s For the Kids! Children’s Seattle Gets $65 Million in Gifts

The news broke on Halloween (no, not the costume-tantrums post) that Seattle Children’s Hospital had pulled off one of the largest trick-or-treats ever. The hospital announced that it had received two gifts totaling $65 million. One, from an anonymous donor, was for $50 million from an estate, to support pediatric research at Seattle Children’s Research Institute.

Another $15 million came from Mrs. Jean Reid of Bellevue, causing us to take back all the unkind things we’ve ever said about the Eastside. Continue reading It’s For the Kids! Children’s Seattle Gets $65 Million in Gifts

The Viaduct is a Hard Habit to Break

The Viaduct is a Hard Habit to Break

Last weekend, the Washington Department of Transportation opened a closed Viaduct to pedestrian traffic, so people could say their (first) goodbyes to the spit-and-baling-wire structure in person. It wasn’t the end of the entire Alaskan Way Viaduct–just the end of the southern end, which is being torn down this week, a project that is right on schedule. You can follow along yourself via WSDOT’s construction cameras. Continue reading The Viaduct is a Hard Habit to Break

Mount Rainier’s Nisqually Cleaver has been the site of some spectacular, major rock avalanches recently. Three major rock falls and several smaller ones occurred in just the past week, reports the Seattle Times. The newspaper quotes Stefan Lofgren, lead climbing ranger for Mount Rainier National Park, saying: “From my standpoint of looking at the mountain for 20 years, we’ve probably had rockfalls like this once every five or 10 years.” Continue reading Video of Mount Rainier Rock Avalanche
