Woodland Park Zoo Lowers the Temperature (with Icy Treats)

When it gets hot! hot! hot! like this, zoo animals swelter, too. Woodland Park Zoo finds ways of helping them have fun, as well as cope with the heat. Today, Friday, if you swing by the zoo's Family Farm at 1 p.m., you can watch Kunekune pigs from New Zealand living it up in their kiddie pool. (They're only seven months old so it's age appropriate.)

Op-Ed: Seriously, Will Nature-Deficit Disorder Turn Fatal?

Is it courageous for a 3-year-old to stand her ground against a lion? Is it brave for the boy in this video to say "kitty kitty"? It seems a fairly culturally specific reaction. As an adult, knowing what I do about both Plexiglass and lions, I'd probably still step back from this lionness because I recognize this behavior is (in other, non-Plexiglassed circumstances) very dangerous.

I know the zoo always prefers ethnically/culturally/geographically appropriate names for their animals, but just like with The Killing, I implore them to not be so boring or predictable. For python names, I suggest Egyptian Cobra, Honey Badger, or Kitty. Also acceptable: Huggy or Squeezy.

Check out this video of the Woodland Park Zoo's latest zoo baby, newly-named eight-week-old ocelot kitten Evita, as she gets a health exam (and a clean bill of health) from the zoo staff. The best part: angry kitteh noises at 0:32 and the end of the clip. You mad, in the cutest way possible.
