This weekend is the closing weekend of a daring show by the People's Theatre of Seattle, a new theatre company founded by actors Zaki Abdelhamid and Devin Kearns: Sixteen Wounded, a play by Eliam Kraiem about the vagaries of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict (at Open Circle/Freehold, tickets $15). Set in the Netherlands during the Nineties, the story is about an angry young Palestinian immigrant who finds himself saved by an aging Holocaust survivor.

If the story risks being a bit precious, it's nevertheless timely and willing tackle an otherwise controversial topic, and I can't help but applaud the efforts of artists like Abdelhamid (a phenomenal actor who recently won praise for his performance in Yussef El-Guindi's Jihad Jones and the Kalashnikov Babes at Theater Schmeater) for creating new opportunities for the theatre to tackle complex issues in an otherwise watered down and risk-averse scene.
