After Isaiah Stanback’s two-year Cowboys career as a receiver/returner ended with his release Saturday, he found interest from several other NFL teams–including one of the top organizations in football. The New England Patriots want Stanback as a quarterback and have signed him to their practice squad as such.
Stanback is the third quarterback on the team’s roster, behind Tom Brady and rookie Bryan Hoyer. Evidently the Patriots scouted Stanback exclusively as a quarterback when he came out in the ’07 draft.
“I busted my butt at receiver and did whatever was asked of me,” Stanback told Tim MacMahon of the Dallas Morning News. “Quarterback is what I’ve done my whole life. It’s what I’m comfortable with.”
You can’t help but wonder if the Patriots are thinking about employing Stanback in some sort of “wildcat” role–either for them or as practice for their defenders on the scout team.
Responding to last month’s Mike Vick rumors, owner Bob Kraft shot down the notion of a Pats Wildcat, saying, “we’ve got the No. 1 player at that position in the world … Why would we ever want to take him off the field for one play?”
Still after how Miami burned them with the wildcat last season; presumably the Pats either want their own “wildcat” weapon or they want to be better prepared for it.
Can’t imagine a more perfect player than Stanback for the wildcat role. He’s got the arm strength to throw a ball seventy-five yards on the fly (see below), and the speed (he ran college track) to get to the corner on any defense.
