This Week's DVD Releases: All About District (500) Might Get Extracted

With Christmas almost here, you might need a movie or two to get through the next few days.  I've already covered what's playing in theaters, but here's the latest DVD releases, care of our good friends at Scarecrow Video.

Cutie-patootie rom-com (500) Days of Summer would make even the Grinch's heart grow three sizes.  For that you can thank director Marc Webb, as well as equally adorably matched stars Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  Sigh.  I'd gladly marry either/both.

I've already written about District 9 elsewhere, but the sci-fi apartheid allegory is out on DVD this week.  And nothing says Christmas like aliens living as second-class citizens.  If you're a music lover, check out documentary It Might Get Loud, featuring performances by guitar gods Jack White, The Edge, and Jimmy Page.   And there's also Extract, a Mike Judge workplace comedy (a la Office Space), starring our beloved Jason Bateman as the bedraggled owner of an artificial flavor plant.  It's funny enough to warrant a rental.  Bonus:  Ben Affleck has a great supporting part as a sleazy, long-haired bartender.

I will not ruin Christmas by mentioning one of the worst movies of 2009, All About Steve.  Sandra Bullock may be having a very good year, but avoid this one like the plague, or the holiday equivalent thereof.
