Today, Slightlynorth‘s contribution to our Flickr pool helps take me on an odd wander down memory lane. My late grandfather spent most of his adult life working for the railroad, and when I was young, I remember taking the train with he and my grandmother from Portland to Idaho, where my great-grandmother lived on a ranch near Nampa and Caldwell.
Last week I took the train for the first time in a long time, this time from Portland to Seattle: a shorter ride through less glorious country than the Columbia River Gorge. The combination of that and visiting Portland–where I haven’t spent much time as an adult–was very nice in that regard, a jaunt down memory lane to back when I used to visit him at his office in the Pittock Building in downtown, and where I used to stare at the window from several floors up and look down on the rain drenched streets of red brick.
