Hot Water Music and The Menzingers at Showbox Market [Photo Gallery]

Hot Water Music, La Dispute, and The Menzingers ended their weeks long tour together the other night at our very own Showbox at the Market. And what a show it was! All three punk bands play a very different brand of the stuff, but together it was a night of great music. We were there to capture it just for you.

Oops. Sorry, the band did not allow professional photos to be taken of them. I’m sure you can find plenty of them from this show on Instagram though.

A Small Sliver of Bumbershoot 2012 [Photo Gallery]

This was a weird Bumbershoot for me. I wasn’t really all that excited about much of the music, but the two acts I wanted to see, I REALLY wanted to see. Those were Reignwolf and Foxy Shazam. Lucky for me, they both were scheduled for Bumber-Monday afternoon. Perfect.

We start with Reignwolf over on the Starbucks Stage. He exploded onto the stage with Amazen King as a special guest on the bucket drums. They powered through a face-melting set of old school rock-and-roll, complete with vanilla-smelling smoke billowing out of the amps. I think if there was anything wrong with the set, it would be that Jordan was way too far away from the crowd. He even moved his kick drum and mic to the very edge of the stage in an effort to get closer. Regardless, the crowd was 100% invested in his set. It was impressive to see one of the larger stages that packed with fans at 1 p.m. He also got the only encore call from a non-mainstage act I have ever seen in my many years attending Bumbershoot. So I hope you got a chance to see him on this relatively intimate stage when you had the chance, because I doubt he will be playing to any smaller of a crowd in the coming years.

Next up for me was Foxy Shazam.
Foxy Shazam - 20

Performing in the Expo Hall is never an easy task. The sound in there isn’t even close to good and the giant pillars down the length of the room really restrict the view. However, Foxy Shazam pretty much owned that space from the second they took stage. Packed with energy, they powered through most of their latest album “The Church Of Rock And Roll” while pondering on various topics like how they were dissed by Rolling Stone. I don’t think there was a single time during the set that I wasn’t either impressed, shocked, or laughing. Nothing compared to the keyboard player crowd surfing *with his full-sized keyboard* and continuing to play the song. I have never seen that before. Well played, Foxy Shazam.

Other than that, I spent the rest of the day wandering around the grounds and taking in the scene. I checked out the art, watched some of the Elvis karaoke, had a dozen mini Mighty-O Donuts, and explored the offerings in The Armory. Lots of photos from both Reignwolf and Foxy Shazam along with the rest of my Bumber-experience after the jump.

Prima Donna Set To Destroy The Funhouse Tonight!

This is what happened at The Manette Saloon Saturday night in Bremerton when L.A. rockers Prima Donna dropped into the area.

They are set to play The Funhouse tonight with Blue Ribbon Boys, Vast Void, and The Piniellas starting at 9 p.m. The cost at the door is just $5 too. How can you beat that?

For more about Prima Donna, check out their Twitter and Facebook profiles. More photos from the Bremerton show after the jump!

The Lemonheads @ The Triple Door [Photo Gallery]

Last night Evan Dando and The Lemonheads played to a packed house at The Triple Door. I say “Evan Dando and The Lemonheads” because the show featured just as many songs with Evan acoustic and alone on stage as it did with the rest of his band.

The set was billed as 1992 album It’s A Shame About Ray in its entirety, but after five or six songs by himself, I was wondering when that would occur. I didn’t have to worry though, because just then the rest of the band came out and launched into the album we all wanted to hear. It was an amazing performance by The Lemonheads, sounding just as good as they did nineteen years ago.

They didn’t play the hidden-track fan favorite cover of “Mrs. Robinson”–apparently Paul Simon hated Evan’s version, while Art Garfunkel liked it. But half an hour later, once the album was done, the band left Evan all by himself for another handful of solo acoustic songs. I don’t know that you could call it an encore, considering Evan never really left the stage, as the band joined him one last time for a set featuring “Into Your Arms,” which, for me, was the highlight of the night.

All in all, a great show. Evan’s voice sounded just as good as it always has and his songs will always remind me of a simpler time. The 1990s.

I also shot a video of “Alison’s Starting To Happen,” one of my all-time favorite Lemonheads songs:

Openers were The Shining Twins from New York and Street Chant from New Zealand.

Lots of photos from the show follow.

The Damned @ Showbox Market (Photo Gallery)

Did you know The Damned are 35 years old this year? That thought makes me feel old and impressed at the same time. As most bands are doing at this stage of their careers, The Damned are touring this year (they were in Seattle last Thursday at Showbox at the Market) by playing two albums from front to back–their 1977 album Damned, Damned, Damned and their 1980 The Black Album. Both are important milestones to the band’s lengthy career and both were performed exceptionally well with just a short break (and costume change) between them. Sadly, for me, the only thing missing from this show was including “Smash It Up (parts 1&2)” in the encore. Still, it was an amazing night of music from a band that has been around just about as long as I have.

How I Spent My Bumbershoot (Plus a Photo Gallery)

If you know me personally, you know how disappointed I was in this year’s Bumbershoot lineup. Sure, it may be because I had so much fun at Soundfest just a couple of weeks before, but the Bumber-music fell a bit short for me.

However, I do like that a lot more local artists were involved. which is always good to see. And I don’t want it to seem like I didn’t have fun, because I did. It’s just strange to go to Bumbershoot and not be conflicted about which stage to go to because you want to see two things happening at the same time. That didn’t happen to me once this year.

While my music taste is quite a bit outside of the majority, I can still usually find a full day (at least one) of Bumbershoot to enjoy. This year I was lucky to find four artists on Sunday that I was stoked to see. But it isn’t all doom and gloom–I did get a chance to check out a few that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

So how did I spend my Bumbershoot weekend? On Saturday I actually got a chance to contribute for the first time and helped keep all of your grubby hands off of that basketball in the fishbowl at The Magic Show in the Seattle Center Pavilion. It gave me a chance to appreciate how much work goes into providing non-music art to the Bumbercrowd.

Gone are the days of art being in the spacious NW Rooms (because KEXP is starting to move in to that space). Instead, most of the visual art was stuffed into the corner near the skatepark, including an installation in the skatepark complete with signs stating that skating was not allowed. Along with The Magic Show and Skaters Gauntlet, this area also featured the Bumber By Number interactive exhibit and the Orange Man, who was handing out orange balloons all weekend long. Other than Flatstock, I didn’t see much in the way of visual art this year. So, I wrapped up my Saturday with a stop at the Mighty-O Donuts booth for some fresh hot mini donuts and then headed to Belltown for a tattoo consult.

Sunday found me a lot more involved with the music of Bumbershoot. I didn’t plan it this way, but everything I saw was at either the Fisher Green Stage or the Exhibition Hall. I started the day off with Mad Rad (photo at top) which may be the favorite of the day. They had a ton of energy and a very sizable crowd. I then headed over to catch NoMeansNo at (a first for me) the Exhibition Hall. While I prefer their Hanson Brothers band, it was still nice to see at least one old-school punk group.

Next up was a break for more Mighty-O donuts and then back over to Expo Hall for Atari Teenage Riot. The crowd in line quickly adopted referring to them as “Atari Middle-Aged Riot,” but they still created one of the longest lines of the day thus far. Atari Teenage Riot came out like a bomb and kept the electro-antiestablishment-punk energy song after song, along with a healthy amount of lasers. (This created problems for the photography crew, as apparently the fire marshall saw just how packed we were in there and forced the stage manager to send us in only seven at a time. Strange, but I guess we made it work.)

Another break, this time for some water and to check out Das Racist. They had a lot less energy than I was told to expect, and they seemed to love taunting the crowd with “Hey there, Bonnaroo!” over and over. Still, a good-sized crowd of younger people were really into it. And maybe that was the point of this year’s lineup: a new fresh Bumbershoot crowd. (I was quickly put in my place when I mentioned this, and someone asked me why then was Hall and Oates the headliner rather than Macklemore. Touché. From what I heard, Macklemore packed Key Arena, while Hall and Oates struggled to even fill half of it.)

After some Das Racist, I was back at Expo hall to catch Anti-Flag. Those problems I mentioned earlier? At the front door to the hall, we were informed of the same photographer deal: seven in at a time, shoot three songs, then rotate out to let more in. We were all promised we would get a chance to shoot. With that, a lot of us waited for over forty minutes for Anti-Flag to take the stage. (Expo Hall was running late all day.) So I didn’t get many good shots of Anti-Flag, but there were at least three others who didn’t get any shots.

After waiting so long for the late start to that show, I decided to head over and catch the beginning of the Butthole Surfers. Gibby and company plowed through their set in typical Butthole Surfers style and appeared to really enjoy it. I think this was the oldest crowd I had seen at the Fisher Green stage all day, but that could also be because a large portion of the Youngs were in line at the Key at try to see Macklemore. Instead, I stuck around and caught The Kills, which capped off my Bumbershoot weekend.

And now for the photo gallery part of my report…
