Having a friend who’s considered herself a “Titaniac” since elementary school means that when the ship-sinking centennial rolls around, there’s sure to be a once-in-a-lifetime fête commemorating the occasion. So it was last Saturday night, with an authentic nine-course Titanic meal (complete with wine pairings, natch) at the Alki Bathhouse. Even the invitations indicated that it would be a night to remember.

Anchors aweigh! Every invitee was given a real passenger's dossier to serve as inspiration. I was a Parisian model who went down with the ship. Spoiler alert!

Meanwhile, my roommate was a New York actress who made it out on the first lifeboat.

The wines we were assigned to bring. http://bit.ly/IwILvU

I immediately put myself in charge of all the wines, as is my wont.

As you might recall, Saturday night was beautiful. Here's the view from Alki.

The view inside wasn't so bad neither.

All dolled up.

The table settings were ornate. Remember: when it comes to utensils, work from the outside in.

This is the exact way the napkins were folded on the Titanic.

And here's the menu.

The night started off with canapes.

And oyster forks!

Oysters a la russe are served with tomatoes.

"Potage Saint-Germain" is just a fancy way to say "pea soup."

Dungeness crab ravioli with cream sauce.

Every meal should include a punch course. It's basically an adult slushie.

Curried chicken and rice was served to the vessel's Second Class passengers.

Asparagus salad with champagne and saffron vinaigrette

And for dessert, a chocolate eclair and coconut sandwiches.

Bon voyage, you're all dead.

Now I take my leave of you with seven pages of Titanic factoids.

Glimpses: “Rough Morning”

Not our wishes for any of you on this first Monday of April, but rather a reminder of Lady Liberty’s dedicated watch over the entry to Elliott Bay. Rough morning or not, she is there – marking our city’s geographic origins and serving as an admirable proxy for her big sister on the other coast. Thanks to smohundro for capturing her point of view and placing it into our Flickr pool.
