Atlas Genius, TONIGHT at the Neptune

Tonight, November 11th, catch Atlas Genius at the Neptune Theatre. (Doors 7 p.m., show 8p.m., $25).

Charming Australian brothers Keith (vocals/guitar), Michael (drums) and Steve Jeffery (bass) formed Atlas Genius back in 2009 and two years later stumbled upon success after the release of their debut single “Trojans”. The song was written, recorded and produced in their self-built studio with friend Darren Sell on the keyboards. Within hours, the song spread like wildfire across the web. Sans label (which us Seattle folks are very familiar with), Atlas Genius had a hit on their hands.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year or so, “Trojans” and “If So” with their catchy riffs have been happily stuck in your head. Unlike most bands that cite The Beatles and The Strokes as influences and get lost within imitation, Atlas Genius’ melodies show hints of their muses but are unique enough to stand alone.

I stumbled upon Atlas Genius’ set at Sasquatch and quickly decided they were “Most Likely to be a Headliner Next Year.” They’ve been all over the festival circuit this past summer exposing audiences far from home to their full-length album When It Was Now. Beyond their obvious commercial ability, Atlas Genius’ formula of polished vocals, 80s-esque synths, and an undulating guitar works.

Now, Atlas Genius is properly headlining their own tour after opening for Imagine Dragons only months before. Starting the night is indie/folk band Family of the Year and Detroit duo Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr..
