Love May Be Stupid and Crazy, but It’s Still Better than Cowboys & Aliens

I hate to have to say this, but Cowboys & Aliens, I expected more. The problem with the film becomes evident in the opening credits, where there are five screenwriters listed. If that’s how many people did enough work on this script to get credited, they surely were polishing a turd. Unfortunately, Cowboys & Aliens is still plenty turdy. Harrison Ford and often shirtless Daniel Craig are just fine, and Olivia Wilde gets to smolder vacantly, but no one’s having as much fun as they should be, director Jon Favreau included. This is no Iron Man, and somehow, the promise of the genre mashup inherent to the title never comes to fruition.

Meanwhile, Crazy, Stupid, Love is the best “adult comedy” of the summer, whatever the hell that means. (30 Minutes or Less is actually the best “comedy comedy” of the summer, but more on that closer to the release date, August 12th.) The family-friendly-ish PG-13 rom-com hits most of the right notes and has enough of a loveable, winning cast–Steve Carrell, Julianne Moore, Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone–to make it work. Recommended for Moms, but this is a chick flick even men probably won’t mind being dragged to.

Crazy, Stupid, Love is now playing at the Meridian, the Metro, Thornton Place, and the Big Picture. Cowboys & Aliens is at Pacific Place, Metro, Majestic Bay, and Thornton Place. Let us not speak of The Smurfs.
